October Lunch at Houston's Trail's End
The September Chamber luncheon was held at Houston’s Trails End Restaurant and
the program consisted of Kane County and Kanab City leadership talking about things
of interest to the business community. Chamber board member Nicholas Meyeres
welcomed the approximately 50 attendees, and after announcing new and renewing
Chamber members, Meyeres turned things over to Kane County Commissioner, Gwen
Brown.
Commissioner Brown gave updates on some of the building projects that have been in
the developing stage for years, saying “It takes a lot of time, meetings and creating
infrastructure to build in unincorporated areas of the county.” She started in the East
Zion area of the county, with the Discovery Center/Visitor Center at the east entrance of
Zion National Park, and then mentioned two other projects in that area, Zion Spirit and
Hidden Canyon which will include cabins and glamping sites. Then she moved over to
Johnson Canyon to Camp Kaia, and several others within the county, including to the
north in Alton and Cedar Mountain. Shannon McBride, the county land use
administrator, spoke to the audience about how things were really bustling in the county
in the couple of years after the COVID pandemic, and how most building projects have
been slowing down since that time.
Next, the group heard from Kanab City manager, Kyler Ludwig. He began with the
openings of the new Ace Hardware store and the Fairfield by Marriott hotel. A couple of
new businesses will be a Dollar Store on the south end of town and a tap room/craft
brewery in the center of town, within nice walking distance for visiting tourists to relax at
the end of a day of hiking and exploring the area. Ventana resort has applied for some
new permits and work at Catori Canyon continues.
To wrap up the program, Commissioner Celeste Meyeres talked about what’s been
happening regarding the North Rim, the rockslide in Zion, and work on the Sand Dunes
road. All in all a very informative luncheon.
